Putting a baby to sleep was made possible by Pavlov’s dogs. Conditioning benefits are from Ivan Pavlov and the experiment he did on his dogs and they are to be appreciated and you can read more in the website. The training that Ivan taught the dogs was that at the chime of the bell then it was a feeding cue. The dogs overtime got used to timetable and associated a bell ring with food. Easy, right? The feeding cue for the dogs was the bell which they would react to accordingly once it rang. However, the issue here isn’t dogs it is the baby’s sleep pattern.
The training aspect of both the dogs and the baby are similarly the only difference is that we know the baby is not a dog. Pick your baby’s sleeping cues by following your baby’s routine.
These will be essential in helping your baby to sleep because you will look out for the time she sleeps and what she does and know that the is preparing to sleep.
The concept is great right? It is not easy to implement as it is easy to write. For this idea to work it is a must you consider some aspects.
One, you need a constant organized timetable for the baby on a daily basis. The reason behind this is that a schedule leads to consistency which to predictability. If the schedule is followed constantly on a daily basis you will know what to expect and also what follows after that and be able to know the sleep cue.
Sometime you want to help the baby to settle so she can sleep on her own.
During the times when you decide that you want to put the baby to sleep make sure you do it consistently and gently.
Swaying rhythms helps a baby to go to sleep. The swaying if needed should be gentle for the baby’s relaxation because if it is done fast the baby will think it’s a cue to play.
In case you do not have a schedule it is about time to draft one. A cue could involve bathtime. If you design your schedule in a way that after bathtime there is some activity centered on sleeping it should not be a problem if you tell them to go to bed.
Since conception when the baby is in the womb they grow accustomed to the womb. No baby can come to the world with a lot of stimuli as it is feared there will be an issue of insecurity. For a baby to sleep properly the transition from the womb to the world should be gentle and smooth.
